As much as we love puppies, something must be done about the rampant
breeding going on in Kern County and other areas..  There are over 100
puppies (unweaned or very young) in the Bakersfield shelter as I type this.
There are not enough foster homes for them all.  Many will start and end
their lives in a concrete run.  The momma dogs do their best, only to watch
as their pups are taken away to die, and then, they too lose their lives.

The dogs on this page are lucky, they will be allowed to raise their families
in a secure, quiet location with plenty of food & love.  The pups will recieve
proper vaccinations and then will be spayed/neutered (as will their moms)
so they will not contribute to the over population problem.

Please spay and neuter.  Thank you.
Our Nursery
Sonny is one of 3 puppies that came to us at about 1 week of age.  Their momma died when they were about 5 days old.
Originally there were 7 in the litter, by the time we were called there were only 3.  They were dehydrated and pretty weak.   We
lost one the first night, and another about 2 weeks later.   Sonny is now 8 weeks old & is doing great.  He only weighs about 1 1/2
pounds.  He was 5 oz when we got him.

Because he is so small, we won't be getting him neutered until he is about 5 months.  He will be available after that.
My most recent trip to Bakersfield was to pick up 4 dogs... I
walked the kennels & found this momma/pup combo & just
couldn't leave them there.   I have named the momma "Daisy" and
the baby (girl), Tulip.   Daisy is about 6 pounds.   Tulip is about 5
weeks old now and it looks like she is going to be long haired.
Grey Dawn and her yet un-named puppies also came
home with me.  I only have the one official nursery, so it
is now divided with a baby gate & the two mommas are
sharing it.   Grey Dawn has 4 puppies, all appear to be
shorthaired.  Grey Dawn is about 10 or 12 pounds & is
delightfully friendly and sweet.
