Trick Training
featuring "Elvis" a 10 month old foster
Jumping thru a hoop is a cute trick that is a real crowd pleaser.  You can start with a stick, which is actually easier for the
dog, or you can go right to the hoop.  This is Duke's prop, so it is a little small for Elvis, but he is a pretty smart fellow and
did well with it.   Once you have taught your dog to jump on command, it is easy to get them to jump over just about
anything.  Once they have mastered the hoop, then they will jump thru a hoop you make with your arms, or you can rest
your foot on your knee (assuming you can balance) forming a "hoop" between your legs.
To start, the hoop is on the ground (I
do my small dog training on my bed so
I don't have to bend over) and you
simply ask the dog to follow the treat
thru the hoop.  Notice that I do not lift
the hoop up, he just calmly walks thru
it.  Repeat this step until he willingly
goes thru the hoop on command.
Once he has the idea, you can start to
raise the hoop.  It is perfectly ok if the
dog "climbs" thru the hoop instead of
jumping.  He will make the transition
when he is ready to!
He did alot of climbing, but finally he made his first jump!
